Description

Using APNIC Labs' ad-based measurement system (daily collection since November
2025 to June 2026, 7.4+ billion unique query IDs), we examined resolver-to-
authoritative traffic in two ways that, to our knowledge, have not been done before.
First, we separate queries into per-resolver fluxes — ISP IPv4, ISP IPv6, each public
DNS service individually, and other resolvers in- and out-of-country. We then
perform statistical analysis within each flux. Second, we look up close at the first few
milliseconds of every unique query's life, and beyond: the initial query at 0ms,
immediate duplicates at <10/30/100ms, timeout retransmissions from 300ms to 30s,
and "zombie" replays arriving after 30s — per RR type (A, AAAA, HTTPS).
That analysis exposes several findings that have an operational impact.
