Description

On June 30th, 2026 the root server operators observed an increase in query rates to approximately double normal levels. The additional traffic originated from a small number of related autonomous systems and, while significant in terms of volume, did not appear to be an attack.

Upon establishing contact with the originating network, they were able to identify the reason and roll back recent changes, which returned traffic to previous levels. Additionally, they were able to point to a known bug in the open source software they use as the root cause.
