The Summer Palace
A guided tour Friday, November 6 14:00 - 17:30 The Summer Palace is located in Haidian District, northwest of Beijing, about 15 kilometers far from the city centre. It was the former palace garden of the Qing Dynasty, of which name means "Garden of Health and Harmony". In the palace, the long corridor, marble boat, Pavilion of the Fragrance of Buddha, opera building, Seventeen-Arch Bridge, jade belt bridge and other constructions are called treasures in the world's architectural culture and have very high status in the domestic and overseas garden art history. The whole palace is divided into three parts, Longevity Hill's front hill, Kunming Lake, and Rear-Hill and Back-Lake. Front hill is centered with the Pavilion of the Fragrance of Buddha, forming a huge main architectural complex, magnificent, majestic, full of power and grandeur. Kunming Lake is lying in the south of Longevity Hill and covering about 3/4 of the entire area of the palace. South Lake Island is located in the center of the lake and linked to the shore by the beautiful Seventeen-Arch Bridge. In the west of the lake, there are 6 beautiful bridges built on the West Causeway. Surrounded by green eddying water and tall age-old pine trees, the environment of Rear-Hill and Back-Lake is so beautiful.
Tingliguan
Chinese style dinner Friday, November 6 18:00 - 20:00 Tingliguan is one of the 13 major structures in the Summer Palace. It is located at the southern side of Wanshou (Longevity) Hill and faces Kunming Lake. Tingliguan was built in 1750 by Emperor Qianlong (1711-99) for his mother's birthday. It was torched by the Anglo-French Allied Forces in 1860, and was rebuilt by Emperor Guangxu (1871-1908) to become a favoured place of recreation for Empress Dowager Ci Xi (1835-1908). The name, Tingliguan was given then. From the literal meaning of the characters, it means Hall for Listening to Orioles. This means that the melodies of the concerts and operas was likened to the beautiful sounds of the orioles, hence the name Tingliguan. On a plate over the gate of the main hall of the courtyard, visitors can still view the characters written by Ci Xi today, because the 6,000-square-metre Tingliguan is now a famed restaurant that offers imperial food in Beijing, such as the Royal Feast of Complete ManchuHan Courses, Imperial Court Cuisine, Imperial Longevity Cuisine, and Imperial Tonic Medicated Diets.
